UNICAL Students Rejects School fees Increase By Management
Students of the University Of Calabar (UNICAL) on Monday rejected the alleged proposed tuition fee increase from between N37,000 and N39,000 to from N73,000 to N62,000 by the school management.
The students rejected the hike in Calabar during a meeting with the students’ representatives, organised by the Student’s Union Government led by the secretary of the Union, comrade Victor Egba.
Many students have described the proposed increase as “outrageous” considering the current economic hardship being faced by parents and the negative impact of COVID-19.
Earlier, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of the University of Calabar, Prof. Mike Okom, has described as false, rumours making the rounds that the University of Calabar has increased school fees for freshers.
Also, in an interview with Hit FM Calabar, the DVC also said that the rumour that the University has asked students to start paying N5,000 for gate permits was also false.
In his words, “As we speak, the University of Calabar has not increased school fees for freshers, neither have we asked students to pay N5,000 as gate permit.
UNICAL is one of the cheapest universities in the South-South. At the management level, we have not sat to review any increase in school fees.
“A few days ago, we had a meeting with stakeholders and officials of the Students Union Government and they debunked the false report been circulated by students that we have increased fees.
“As management, we will continue to do what is right for the good of the students.
“There University has not brought out any circular announcing fees increase and gate permit. People should desist from spreading fake rumours,” he said.
He added that the University has increased hostel accommodation from N16,500 to N21,000.
